So, how much was the damage? Is it possible that the engine will be fine?
In this day and age, is it still not possible to rev cars like in a videogame, you know, hitting that rev limiter for shits and giggles without nothing bad happening?.
Not that im a fan of doing that, just curiosity.

I mean they durability test some of these engines on a dyno for a solid week. For a modern engine I would assume its probably going to be okay. Considering its in neutral and doesn’t have any load on the transmission.
Having siad that I wouldn’t do this myself, it just seems beyond stupid.
Edit: also a lot of engines are restricted or have lower limiter settings while parked opposed to while in motion.

Neither would I, although if I had a great sounding car I would sometimes just rev it up because fun. once or twice, but not doing that, even if nothing happens it sounds like its suffering :(

Yeah, I’d have to agree that this would not do anything horrific to the engine, but I still wouldn’t do anything that stupid to a $100,000+ sports car. That’s just moronic. And, even my wife’s T&C has a rev limiter when parked. It won’t go over 4,000 RPM.

Depends on what RPM the limiter is set at.
Cam bearings, lifters, and pretty much the valve train would be trashed if it was at significantly high rpm. Modern cars with fancy roller valve trains are less susceptible to this damage.
Unless the oiling system is just completely inadequate, the bottom end will see bearing wear but I don’t think it will be trashed.
The car probably runs at lower oil pressure now.

Yeah, I think some people assume that High Sprung Engine=Indestructible engine.

that thing sounded like 7k rpm while stopped.
About car running at lower oil pressure, I guess that could translate to poorer lubrication of the engine which will become into a degrading engine in the close future. (oil consumption, less power, noisier engine).
Yep, I think the engine is soon to be trashed :(
I think it would be nice knowing the limits on engine revving while parked, is there any engine that could get this kind of abuse and not suffer from it, not even in the long run if given proper care in its lifetime?

You have oil lines that pass through the bearings, hence why you get lower oil pressure with significant bearing wear. The valve train would suffer damage due to oil starvation issues caused by the bearing wear. Since it has roller rockers and lifters, this damage is likely minimal, but the bearing wear will be unavoidable.
Engines with wide bearing clearances and thick oils won’t suffer too much, because more oil stays between the bearing and the rotating metal parts. Race motors are built to tolerances like this.
Modern cars have fairly tight clearances and use thin oils. The Porsche is probably designed so that it will happily tach up and down all day, but I doubt it likes sustained RPM; hence the rev limiter.
Performance cars like the Porsche are designed with durability testing in mind, they probably run those engines on dynos for weeks just to see what happens. Most engines are pretty tough and won’t be hurt by abuse for short periods of time. It will probably be fine as long as the owner doesn’t do stupid crap like this often.

The more you know! Thanks for such great information.

911 engines are among the most durable. You can rev way past the limiter on downshifts and probably be OK. It will void your warranty of course. That said, I wouldn’t ever do what this guy is doing - I wonder if there are cooling issues if car is not moving?

I rev F-Types like mad, but nothing like this. I’be never gone above about 5k and maybe 3 or four revs. Anything above that just makes it louder, but it doesn’t actually sound any better.
This guy’s was just screaming “LOOK AT ME! FUCKING LOOK AT ME! I HAVE A FUCKING MOTHERFUCKING PORSCHE 911 LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT IT LOOK AT IT LOOK AT IT! LOOK LOOK LOOK LOOK LOOK LOOK LOOK LOOK! YOUR PUNY CHEAP CARS ARE NOTHING COMPARED TO ME LOOK! MY DICK IS SMALLER THAN YOURS LOOK AT IT! LOOK LOOK LOOK LOOK! ITS RED AND LOUD LOOK! LOOK AT MY RED AND LOUD PORSCHE 911! I BOUGHT THIS WITH MY EXPANSIVE TRUST FUND LOOK AT IT! LOOK AT ME LOOK! LOOK! AT! ME!” + about 3 minutes of shouting for you to look at him. And then he melted his bumper, as you could see at the end.

That is just plain stupid no matter how safe it is or isn’t.

Am I the only one who thought it didn’t sound like the normal flat-six sound we’re familiar to? This thing sounds so different.
